Steiff, the legendary German plush toy company, is famous for its artistry, beauty, and lasting quality. Founded in 1880 by seamstress Margarete Steiff, it was later expanded by her nephew, Richard Steiff, who invented the world's first Teddy bear with movable limbs. This Smardy Fox hand puppet is a great example of a forest critter that Steiff turned into a handsome and playful toy. Based on a fox that is featured in a children's math book, this puppet was finely handcrafted in Germany between 1964-67 and uses the nicest mohair plush. Different from most puppets developed during the same period, Smardy is full bodied and has an incredible presence with its bushy and lustrous long mohair tail. Its head is stuffed with excelsior (wood wool) and has a plastic finger tube for movement. This puppet is well preserved with nice coloring! It is also special because it retains all Steiff IDs. Please note that the paper chest tag is worn. Smardy can't wait to be part of your vintage toy collection.
