STEIFF Tom Cat Hand Puppet ~ 1950-60s

Steiff, the iconic plush toy company founded in Germany, is internationally renowned for its artistry, beauty, and lasting value. It began in 1880 with the seamstress Margarete Steiff, and was later expanded by the creativity of her nephew, Richard Steiff, who invented the world's first Teddy bear with movable limbs.

Tom Cat is among their beautiful creations and is certainly a favorite among Steiff's beloved felines. Expertly handcrafted in Germany out of mohair plush, this character is even more entertaining as a hand puppet! Its expressive glass eyes are an indication of an early model, made circa 1950-60s. With nylon whiskers and a hand-stitched nose/mouth, this kitty's head is filled with excelsior (wood wool) and has a cardboard finger tube for movement. Well loved with worn mohair and some bald spots, it retains Steiff's ear button while other IDs are missing. The bow is not original. This sweet puppet will be a nice addition to your vintage toy collection!
